WWT Slimbridge

Do you know how some places stay in your memories forever? WWT Slimbridge is one of those places. I loved our visit when I was a child and the number of wild birds there was like nothing I’d ever seen before. Located between Bristol and Gloucester in Gloucestershire Slimbridge is a wetland wildlife reserve.

What is there to do at WWT Slimbridge?

Slimbridge is around 100 acres in size and is a haven for migrating birds. In the winter there are up to 30,000 wintering ducks, geese and swans (with numbers changing throughout the year). Plus they have exotic birds from all around the world including their very own flock of flamingos.

They also have otters which they have daily talks and feeding times for visitors to get a better look at these playful animals. There are numerous hides around the observe to observe the birds. With different zones, you may find yourself looking out at Australian birds, Asian or South American.

The Sloane Observation Tower is positioned above the Visitor centre giving amazing views. Access is in the visitor centre by stairs or a lift and entry is free, (by token). Kids will love Welly Boot Land. This is an outdoor playground with water running through it perfect for splashing about in. For an additional charge, you can explore the waterways by canoe or a Land Rover safari.

The Arctic adventure is a family-friendly experience. You collect your passport from base camp and then you make your way around the ‘world’ collecting stamps as you complete the wetland challenges. There is also an Arctic adventure exhibit with additional activities. Remember to pick up a bag of wheat when you arrive so that you can feed the birds. If you want to bring your own, remember that we do not allow bread, but why not try peas, corn or lettuce instead?
