The Cowfish Sushi Burger Bar was another restaurant that I kept seeing great recommendations for. It is located on Universal’s City Walk and it’s another of the few restaurants there where you can reserve a table in advance.
Considering its popularity with people we were surprised to see it often looking empty when we walked past at meal times, especially during a lunch service. So when we did decide to eat at Cowfish it didn’t matter that we didn’t have a reservation.
Cowfish Sushi burger bar is one of the few restaurants at Universal’s City Walk with an outside eating area. So we took advantage of this and chose to eat in the outside seating area which you can see in the photo above. When you arrive at Cowfish look out for the water fountains not far from the restaurant. They make a fun spot to cool down or play chicken!
The reason that Cowfish has its name is that it serves cow and fish! Although they do have other options such as a vegetarian and chicken. The menu is really extensive and I must admit that we struggled to choose something to eat.
The Main Menu at Cowfish
The Cowfish menu has a choice of starters/appetizers. These range from $11.00 for dishes such as crinkle-cut fried pickles up to $16.00. Other dishes are calamari at $15.00, spicy shrimp at $16.00 and yellowtail sashimi at $13.00.
They have a couple of salads at $14.00. Classic makimo sushi at $14.00 to $18.00 for a dish. Fusion speciality rolls at $16.00 up to $23.00 a dish. These sushi rolls are packed with all sorts of ingredients such as – Fresh lobster, tempura fried shrimp, Japanese mayo, topped with ahi tuna, lemon zest and marinated cucumbers, with a side of eel sauce. They also have some more expensive sushi combos at around $33.00.
On the menu, there are around 17 different types of burgers and they’re not just beef burgers. There is a chicken, bacon and avocado burger at $19.00. Boursin bacon burger at $21.00, a Royale burger at $24.00 and much more.
Back to sushi, they have bento boxes, rolls and pick-ups, sashimi and nigiri. The menu is crazy huge! They also have a large selection of handspun milkshakes at around $12.00.
We chose to have a Bento box as that included a bit of both the cow and the fish. They have the cowfish bento box at $17.00 which includes.
“A combo meal featuring both burger and sushi, including a mini-burger with American cheese, pickles and chopped red onion, sweet potato fries, Thai cucumbers, edamame and choice of a 4 piece sushi roll (California, Spicy Tuna, Vegetarian or Philly Roll)” and a special box at $18.00 which is very similar. We chose to try one of each box. I have to say we were a little disappointed.
I think we were expecting it to be a bit bigger and a bit less ‘healthy’. The portions of pickles and cucumbers were far too big for us and just not things we’d choose to eat, especially the beans in their shells. The sweet potato fries weren’t especially nice or different.
Cowfish Kids Menu
The kid’s menu is a choice of different bento boxes. They are all priced at $10.00 and the choices include such things as chicken, cheese, sushi rolls, burgers, mac and cheese and more. Our son chose The Cowfish mini burgers bento box.
“Two all-natural beef mini-burgers topped with American cheese”. His box came with two mini burgers and bread, a rice cake, an apple and an orange. He didn’t like the bread or the rice cake, however, he ate everything else.
Overall Cowfish wasn’t a massive success for us and it was one of the more expensive meals that we had at Universal. Considering we all left hungry it was a bit of a shame. Maybe it was what we chose but we always say that it shouldn’t matter what you choose as it should all be good.
The service was also very slow considering there was hardly anyone else there.
