Museum Overview

The Discovery Museum is a science and local history museum situated in the heart of Newcastle Upon Tyne in Tyne and Wear. It is a massive space over three floors with galleries crammed full of exhibits.

At the museum, you can learn more about the area’s maritime history and more. It is bursting with interactive displays making it a great place to learn and have fun. The displays are regularly updated. The largest exhibit is Turbina which dominates the entrance to the museum. It is the first ship to have been powered by a steam turbine. The 35-metre vessel was once the fastest ship in the world.

There are also examples of Joseph Swan’s early lightbulbs that were invented on Tyneside. The museum is one of the biggest free museums in the North East of England. The Newcastle Story takes you on a journey through the city from Roman times through to the early millennium. The museum has a water play area for under sevens. The museum even has some steam engines and an interactive science maze. Kids can explore their creative side in their PLAY + INVENT space.
