The Royal Mint Experience

The Royal Mint is located in Pontyclun, South Wales. It is educational, fun and a novelty experience. Visits are by a pre-booked tour and during the actual tour cameras and phones are prohibited on the tour and are kept securely locked away until after the factory tour.

What can you do at The Royal Mint Experience?

The tour begins with a seated presentation describing the design process. Next, we moved on to the materials room with the guide explaining the process and facts relating to different coins. After this, we went on to view the factory shop floor, via glass windows. We were able to see thousands of coins moving along chutes and being collected, checked and packaged.

Next came the compress room. For £6.50 per visitor (optional), you are able to press your own 50p coin by pressing down on a button. My Children loved this part and were excited by their new, shiny pressed coins. The last part of the tour involved listening to the tour guide whilst seated around an interactive table explaining the history of the Royal Mint.

The rest of the tour is very interactive. You can try lifting a solid gold bar worth £400,000 or sit on boxes containing thousands of coins. We also designed our own coin templates and played a penny-rolling game. There are plenty of photo opportunities in the foyer, such as a mini car covered in pennies, as well as a Wallis and Gromit figure also covered in coins. There is also a Shaun the Sheep and some Paddington Bear posters.

Is there food and drink available?

There is a cafe on-site selling hot and cold food and drinks.

What are the main things to do?

Factual tour including viewing the factory where British coins are made. Chance to press your own coin, fun photo opportunities and plenty of interactive exhibits. There are toilets on-site, a cafe and a shop.

What are the ticket prices?

Adults are £13.00 and children mid-range at £10.50. Under 5’s are free. There is a large free, car park, it even has an electric car charging station.

There is free parking.

When are they open?

The Royal Mint is open daily, 7 days a week. The first tour is available at 10.00 and the last tour at 16.30. They are closed on Christmas Day and Boxing Day and for the odd private event. For up-to-date opening times and dates please follow this link.
