Things to do at Caerphilly Castle review

Caerphilly Castle dates back to around 1268 and it is a medieval fortification in Caerphilly, South Wales. The castle was constructed by Gilbert De Clarea and is second only in size to Windsor castle. There are massive walls, towers and gatehouses together with sprawling water defences to cover a total of 30 acres.

This frontline fortress was transformed into a palatial home with a hunting park and a lake. It passed into the hands of Edward II’s ruthless and greedy favourite Hugh Despenser who then revamped the great hall in an ornate style. It even features Wales’s very own leaning tower, even wonkier than the leaning tower of Pisa, it is probably the castle’s best-loved feature.

Digital trails around the castle are available on the Cadw app. The castle has an extensive ring of water defences and huge gatehouses. This mammoth stronghold remains a striking testament to the Anglo-Norman domination of the area.

The Dragons’ Lair is a permanent home for the Cadw Dragon family, promising to delight visitors with a full audio-visual display, with smoke, snores and a magical reading of the Dragons’ epic tale, available at the touch of a button. Highlights for young visitors are likely to include Gilbert’s Maze, an interactive medieval labyrinth. Will you be able to dodge the objects, solve the clues and find the secret passageways to capture the castle?
