Museum Overview

Haslemere Educational Museum is located in Haslemere, Surrey. It was founded in 1888 by the surgeon Sir Jonathan Hutchinson to display his growing collection of natural history specimens. The museum moved to its permanent home here in 1926.

It is an award-winning museum with some remarkable collections from natural history, human history and geology across three main galleries. In the human history collection, there are artefacts from all the key British historical periods from the Stone Age to the Victorian era. There are two main collections with artefacts from Ancient Egypt and the European Peasant Art collection.

Their natural history collection is the biggest at the museum. There is a range of taxidermy specimens including the museum’s mascot Arthur the Bear plus other collections from all over the world. The Geology collection contains fine examples of many rocks, minerals and fossils. They run various family-friendly activities and sessions throughout the year including early years sessions and family events.
