Things to do at Butser Ancient Farm

It is a unique experimental archaeology site nestled in the countryside of the South Downs National Park, used as a set for the Horrible Histories movie Rotten Romans. Their buildings have appeared in many documentaries and feature films. They also grow crops from prehistory and keep rare breed animals, such as goats and sheep.

You can explore a timeline of ancient homes as you step back in time. They strive to make the buildings as welcoming and homely as possible to give an impression of what daily life would have looked like all those years ago. There are crackling fires, Stone Age beds, Roman toilets, Celtic herb gardens, Saxon Runes and more.

For families, there is a themed trail or quiz which changes throughout the year. They also have a range of DIY archaeology activities such as mosaic making and wattling fences. They also host a number of special events, with the help of re-enactment groups. Plus there is a guided audio tour.
