Fishbourne Roman Palace

Fishbourne Roman Palace

The Fishbourne Roman Palace is in the village of Fishbourne, Chichester, West Sussex. The palace is the largest residential Roman building discovered in Britain and has an unusually early date of 75 CE, around thirty years after the Roman conquest of England.

Things to do at Fishbourne Roman Palace

Much of the palace has been excavated and preserved with an on-site museum and formal gardens. The museum incorporates many of the visible remains including a wing of the palace and mosaic floors. They have also replanted the gardens using authentic plants from the Roman period.

Undercover there are many impressive mosaic floors plus you can see their underfloor heating systems, corridors and courtyards. The story of the site is told in an audio-visual program using computer-generated imagery.

At the ‘largest Roman home in Britain,’ you can imagine the luxury that would once have surrounded the proud owner of this lavish Roman residence. They also host many special events, including historical events with people dressed in costume. The Collections Discovery Centre offers visitors the chance to look behind the scenes into the conservation laboratory and more. Guided tours and artefact-handling sessions are offered on a daily basis.
