Buxton Museum and Art Gallery is located in the heart of Buxton, Derbyshire. Their permanent galleries showcase 360 million years of the history of the area through archaeology, geology, art and local history.

What can you do at Buxton Museum and Art Gallery?

There is a recreated study where you can find out about archaeologist Sir William Boys Dawkins and other collectors. You can expect to see locally found fossils, Ice Age animal bones and teeth. Plus paintings, drawings and prints, some from local artists. Mineral collections including Blue John from Derbyshire and objects from the Derbyshire police collection plus so much more.

The Wonders of the Peak is their permanent exhibition with over 1,200 objects on display. There are 7 recreated environments to explore, complete with sounds and smells. You can wander in a prehistoric forest, see a bear in an Ice Age cave, crawl inside a Neolithic burial chamber and ‘meet’ a mermaid. They also host a changing programme of exhibitions throughout the year including visiting artists and groups plus displays from their own collection. The ‘Time Moves On’ audio tour will add another dimension to your visit.
