Cardiff Castle is a medieval castle and Victorian Gothic revival mansion located in the centre of Cardiff in Wales. There is the original motte and bailey castle that was built in the 11th century by Norman invaders. Further additions to the castle were built over the years. In the mid 18th century the main larger castle was turned into a Georgian mansion. Many of the medieval buildings were demolished and the castle grounds were landscaped by Capability Brown.
Today you can climb the twelve-sided keep and enjoy panoramic views of the city. There are approximately 50 steep stone steps leading to the Keep entrance and further steps to reach the viewing platform, but it’s well worth it. You can also look around the castle apartments. You can explore fairy-tale rooms rich with murals, gilding and elaborate wood carvings. Plus stained glass and marble. There are around 6 rooms you can view and you can upgrade your ticket to include a guided tour. You might even get to see the Trebuchet firing during your visit.
You can also explore the castles tunnels. These tunnels came into their own as air-raid shelters during the Second World War. It was estimated that more than 1,800 people could take shelter within the walls. Today you can see what the air-raid shelters looked like and hear the sounds of a bygone age.
Today it is possible to enjoy a leisurely stroll along 3 sides of the castle’s outer defences. As you do so, see if you can imagine yourself as a Roman legionary on patrol. Why? Because all three sections of the wall are actually Victorian reconstructions of a Roman fort that once occupied the site.
Cardiff Castle often holds annual events, many of which involve knights. Outdoor cinema is also a popular at the castle.
