Hunmanby Gap Beach

Hunmanby Gap is a short drive south of Filey and an even shorter drive south from Primrose Valley and the Haven Holiday Park. We visited just an hour after high tide and I was wary that there might not be enough sand to walk on. Luckily I needn’t have worried. We were treated to a vast expanse of golden sandy beach. It was so clean as well. No oil, no seaweed, we were very impressed.

The car park is closed from November to March. Luckily we parked in one of three car parking spaces next to the cafe which is then a really short and not very steep walk down to the beach.

We decided to walk in the direction of Primrose Valley/Filey. It’s amazing to see all the houses right by the sea but sad to think they may not be there in a couple of decades’ time. Cliff erosion is quite bad in this area! If you walk in the other direction you will walk in the direction of Reighton Sands. If you do attempt to walk to Filey make sure you pay attention to the tide times as you could get cut off.

There are also a couple of intact pillboxes from World War II on the beach in the direction of Filey. One of them made a great place for us to spend some time building sandcastles and making roads. The beach itself is lined with cliffs, some of which have a good collection of stones and pebbles. You might even find a fossil.

There is a path all the way down to the beach although access once down there is not easy. There are no disabled toilets.
