Kelham Island Museum in Sheffield, South Yorkshire details the history of steelmaking with interactive galleries and on-site craftsmen. The museum has the UK’s largest only working steam engine which operates two times a day.

What can you do at Kelham Island Museum?

Located in Sheffield’s oldest industrial district the museum stands on a man-made island that is over 900 years old. It was opened as a museum in 1982 and houses objects, pictures and more representing Sheffield’s industrial story. In the interactive galleries, you will discover the stories of the workers, the workmanship and the mass production of steel.

Also indoors you will find the Melting Shop play area. Height restrictions apply and it is suitable for children aged 2 to 9. As well as the main museum with its workshops, a gas engine. the steam engine, street scene and 1916 house there are also a couple of transport galleries with some of the finest vehicles from the 1920s.

There is a cafe serving hot and cold food and drinks. You are welcome to bring a picnic and eat in their picnic room.

A museum covering the industrial heritage of steelmaking with interactive galleries and demonstrations. There is an indoor play area for younger children, toilets and a cafe.

What are the ticket prices?

An adult ticket costs around £7 and children under 16 are free.
Prices are subject to change and/or discounts online.

Is there parking?

free, visitor parking is located on the main museum site (50 spaces) and our overflow car park is located adjacent to Kelham Island Brewery and the Fat Cat pub on Alma Street.
