Lullingstone Castle and the World Garden
Lullingstone Castle and the World Garden are located near Dartford, Kent. There is a historic manor house set in an estate in the village of Lullingstone. It has been inhabited by members of the Hart Dyke family for twenty generations which makes it one of England’s oldest family estates.
The house itself is only open to visitors during event days and on bank holidays. Every year Lullingstone hosts a series of events including something for all the family. The present house and gatehouse overlook a stunning 15-acre lake and they were built in 1497. The World Garden was planned by the owner Tom during his 9-month kidnap ordeal in the Colombian Jungle. He opened his diary and made plans for a garden which would contain plants from around the world planted in their respective continents of origin.
Today his garden pays homage to the amazing achievements of Victorian and Edwardian plant hunters who brought back the plants and flowers that we now cherish today. There are many different plants to see including an example of the Dinosaur tree, the world’s rarest Gum tree and the stinky Dog Pooh plant which is the world’s most dangerous plant.
Children will love searching for the numerous wacky sculptures that can be seen as you ‘travel around the world.’ The cactus house is especially interesting and there is a free plant hunter quiz for children to take around with them.
