Pigs in the Wood

Pigs in the Wood is a unique and heartwarming animal sanctuary located in Scissett, Huddersfield, set within 10 acres of natural woodland where around 20 rescued pigs roam freely in a peaceful, natural environment. The sanctuary is a registered charity dedicated to giving pigs and other mistreated animals a safe, loving home, with volunteers working seven days a week to care for the residents and maintain the woodland. Their mission includes rescuing animals from neglect, helping rehome pigs they cannot accommodate, and even taking part in larger rescue operations, such as saving 15 pigs and 3 calves from a farmer who agreed to stop breeding them.

Visitors can explore the woodland on a guided weekend tour, where knowledgeable guides introduce each pig, share their rescue stories, and explain how the sanctuary operates. Guests often get the chance to see the pigs up close, tummy tickles included, and meet other animals such as goats, chickens and even the occasional cat. After the tour, visitors can relax at JenJen’s Café for drinks and cakes, or browse the small gift shop featuring merchandise and pig adoption options.

Tours run every Saturday and Sunday, must be pre‑booked, and cost £8 for a standard ticket or £8.80 with Gift Aid, helping the sanctuary claim an extra 25% to support their work. Children under 2 go free, and all visitors must wear wellies or walking boots due to the natural terrain
