Shanklin Chine

Shanklin Chine is a beautiful place to visit in Shanklin on the Isle of Wight. There is a newly extended tea room and the cream tea is a highlight to any visit. There are some amazing plants growing that you would not believe could grow in the UK.

What is there to do at Shanklin Chine?

Chine is a word used only in the Isle of Wight and Dorset. It means a deep narrow ravine with water running down to the sea. The Chine spring rises in the Downs and can be spectacular in heavy rain, especially at night with the lights. Over the centuries the Chine was used mainly for smuggling. It later became a favourite beauty spot with artists, writers and poets which their exhibition highlights.

There is a nature trail which was designed as a walk through the Chine with numbered stopping places and stations. You can pick up a leaflet from the kiosk or gift shop. The notes and map will lead you to features of particular interest. During your visit, you may see birds and animals, including parrots, cockatiels and more.

You can enjoy Shanklin Chine during the day and then come back in the evening within 7 days to enjoy the illuminated trail. At night it is transformed into a place of magic and enchantment. There is about five miles of cable and just under 200 lights have been installed. The waterfall is illuminated by LEDs. It is worth visiting both in the day and at night.

Is there food and drink available?

There is the Fisherman’s Cottage serving hot and cold food and drinks.

What are the main things to do?

Nature trail through picturesque natural gardens with waterfalls, the trail is illuminated at night. There are toilets and a pub.

What are the ticket prices?

An adult ticket costs £6.95 and entitles you to an evening return visit. Children 5-14 are £5.30 and children aged under 5 are free. Other pricing options are available.

Is there parking?

Please note there is no car parking in the Chine, please use the Vernon Meadow car park in the Old Village (PO37 6AQ) or along Shanklin Esplanade (PO37 6BH).

When are they open?

They are open from early April through to early September.

Dog friendly?

Dogs are welcome on a lead.

Are they accessible?

There is restricted access for mobility impaired guests due to steps and narrow paths through the natural gorge.
