Coal Town is an engaging and interactive exhibition. You are taken into their homes, on picnics, on marches and even on strike. You’ll be crammed into the ‘cage’ like sardines and discover more about the life of a miner. Many of the buildings remain today and they are open for you to explore. As well as housing a large collection of mining equipment there is also an art gallery with works that depict what life was really like for the miners.

Nearby there is a railway with two preserved locomotives that run on a narrow guage railway track. The trains takes you on a trip through the park and alongside the river. There is a small additional charge to ride on the train (around £2 pp).

There is now a relatively new outdoor play area at the museum . The Pityard Play Area has been specially designed to complement the museum and the industrial heritage site. There is a special interactive mining platform with shovels, hoists and wheels, a tower tunnel slide, a crawl-through tunnel, mining carts and even a pair of wooden pit-ponies.

The museum is well known for it’s annual events,.
