Lyme Park National Trust

Lyme Park, near Stockport in Cheshire, is the perfect place for families to go and spend a day out. You’ve got the glorious house, which is surrounded by gardens, moorland and a deer park. You can easily spend all day here. So bring a picnic, wear those walking boots and be prepared for a great day out.

Things to do at Lyme Park National Trust

As with most historic houses, you have a lovely long drive up from the main road, and there is ample parking here as well. However, be warned, the walk from the car park to the house has a very steep climb – so if you have a pushchair, be prepared to use those muscles.

The house itself is stunning, the interior is just breathtaking, and you’ve got six centuries of history to look at whilst you explore this home. You cannot bring large backpacks or pushchairs inside though, however, there are lockers that you can use to store them.

Once you have enjoyed the house, you’ve got the beautiful gardens to explore, which is set against a backdrop of sweeping moorland with extensive views. If you fancy a more tranquil stroll, you can explore the Edwardian rose garden, ravine garden or orangery which is next to the reflecting lake where a certain Mr Darcy met Miss Bennett in the BBC production of ‘Pride and Prejudice’.

You’ve got a 1,400-acre estate to explore to your heart’s content, with its medieval herd of red deer, so you can easily spend all day walking about. Of course, if you have young ones with you, they might not want to go so far. Luckily, children can also let off some steam in the Crow Wood Playscape with its giant badger den and rope walks. If you or your children feel tired after a full day of exploring then you can just head on over to the nearby Timber Yard Café for a moment!

Is there food and drink available?

There is the Timber Yard Café which offers hot and cold snacks, soups and a range of cakes. You’ve also got the Refreshment Kiosk near the car park as well.

Outdoors – Gardens (Edwardian rose garden, ravine garden or orangery), Moorland, Deer Park and Crow Wood Playscape. Indoors – Mansion. There are toilets and a cafe.

Price will differ if you are just visiting the Garden and Park, or if you are visiting the House, Garden and Park (so please double-check online). An adult all-access ticket is £15.00, children 4-14 years £7.50. Family tickets are available.
