Things to do at Caerlaverock Castle review

Caerlaverock Castle is a ruined medieval fortress that was first built in the 13th century. It is located on the southern coast of Scotland a few miles south of Dumfries. The castle is moated and triangular in shape.

The castle was once a stronghold of the Maxwell family from the 13th until the 17th century when the castle was abandoned. It was besieged by the English during the Wars of Scottish independence with the last one in 1640. It has been demolished and rebuilt several times but it still retains the distinctive triangular plan first laid out in the 13th century.

The castles fairytale appearance means that the castle is also a popular filming location. At the castle, you can learn all about siege warfare by paying a visit to their permanent exhibition. You can look inside Nithsdale Lodging which is a remarkable 17th-century residence in the castle courtyard. There is also a fun fact-finding quiz that you can take around with you while exploring the castle. Plus it is recommended that you download their interactive Castle Quest App before your visit to the castle.
