Things to do at Chirk Castle review

Chirk Castle is a Grade 1 listed castle near Wrexham in North Wales. It is a National Trust property with a castle that was built in 1295 by Roger Mortimer de Chirk. The castle guards the entrance to the Ceiriog Valley. There is a two-level dungeon, medieval garderobes (toilets) and even murder holes.

As well as being able to explore the castle there are 480 acres of parkland with numerous trails. Today the woodland is 70% oak trees including some amazing and veteran trees. Walks include a woodland walk, an Old golf walk, Battle of Crogen circular walk and a Llwyn y cil walk that enjoys some fabulous views towards the Cheshire and Shropshire plains.

The castle itself has been occupied virtually continuously for almost 700 years. It sits on a hilltop and enjoys some amazing views. Many of its occupants have left behind lavish interiors including a 17th-century long gallery, a grand 18th-century saloon with rich tapestries, a servant’s hall, a library and more.

The award-winning gardens cover 5.5 acres of manicured lawns with plants and borders. There are two play areas, the Home Farm play area and a wild play area.
