Iceland has to be one of our favourite countries we’ve visited. We loved it so much that we went back for a second time. There is just so much to do in Iceland with kids and quite a lot of places you can visit are free.
Although our son was only young when we visited the Blue Lagoon he still has fond memories of our day. He can’t wait to return and I have to say that I feel the same way. Sure it’s expensive, as most of Iceland is, but the experience outweighs the cost. We spent hours wandering around in the gorgeous hot waters, sitting at the edges and drinking cocktails from the swim-up bar. We have all the information you need to know in advance in our post.
The Golden Circle is our second highlight plus it’s pretty much free to visit if you have hired a car. There are tours from Reykjavik but we had hired a 4×4 so we could explore at our leisure. We have a one-day self-drive itinerary that takes you to all the highlights in this area. Our highlight was seeing the erupting Geysir at Geysir Hot Springs Park.
This post also highlights the best things to do around the Golden Circle. Plus other must-dos for families when visiting Iceland. There is the wonderful capital of Reykjavik, whale watching trips, the Lava Tunnel and more.
We also spent a day in Reykjavik, using the City Sightseeing Bus to get around. We have included a list with a look at what we did during our visit including our highlights and a look at other things you can do that we didn’t have time for. A great place to visit with kids on the outskirts of Reykjavik is Perlan. A lot of visitors stay in Reykjavik and from there you can book several different family-friendly tours. You can also book transfer options from the airport into the city.
One of the craziest things we did during our holiday to Iceland was to go on a guided tour of the Lava Tunnel. We visited at Easter-time so the tunnel still had a lot of ice and snow inside it. This made for dangerous walking conditions, especially for my Mum who has had a double hip replacement. It was an amazing place to visit but perhaps not our best decision on the holiday.
In another of our posts, we take a look at the Hotel Ranga. This is where we stayed during our holiday there and we will be returning as we loved it there. The best thing about it is that you can opt for Aurora wake-up calls. If the northern lights are likely to show up they ring your room so you can leap out of bed to catch them. I saw them on both occasions they rang me up. It means a bit less sleep but it’s worth it! There are also some hot tubs which are great fun in the cold weather.
South Iceland is also a great area to visit with kids especially as it has such a decent road. There are some wonderful waterfalls you can visit along the way, a wonderful folk museum and some gorgeous villages such as Vik with its wild black sand beach. There is also a relatively new attraction in Vik where you can see real lava. Keldur is also worth a visit with its preserved turf-houses. It’s like stepping back in time. There is even a glacier you can easily visit with kids and a plane wreck on a beach plus some ancient caves that pre-date Iceland’s history.
